Every big adventure starts with a first step. For me, it was boarding a train at Berlin Central Station, bound for Prague — the first stop on my overland journey all the way to Singapore.
The train ride was smooth and comfortable, taking just about four hours. I paid 80 EUR for the ticket, and as the countryside rolled past the window, it really sank in: this was the beginning of a trip I’d been dreaming about for a long time.
At the end of every blog post you find some additional route info about the overland journey Berlin to Singapore
Prague is a city that feels like stepping into a storybook. Cobblestone streets, Gothic towers, and hidden corners make it a perfect first destination on this journey. Here’s what I explored:
3 Quick Facts About Visiting Prague
- Walkable city: If you enjoy walking, you can explore most of Prague without needing taxis or public transport. I did everything below entirely on foot
- Cashless travel: I paid for everything by credit card and didn’t carry cash at all.
- Currency tip: The local currency is the Czech koruna (CZK). While the Euro is often accepted, shop exchange rates are usually poor.
My 1-Day Itinerary in Prague
Morning Coffee at Onesip
For me, a perfect morning starts with a delicious Flat White. Hence I’m always looking for a nice cafés. I went to Onesip Coffee and it was an excellent choice. At 92 CZK / 3.80 EUR, it’s not cheap, but that’s about average across Europe nowadays.
Now I was ready to explore Prague and my first stop was just a short walk away:
Powder Gate Tower – A Hidden Gem
One of my favorite discoveries in Prague was the Powder Gate Tower, a medieval city gate that many people overlook. The viewing deck is 44 meters high and offers a fantastic perspective over Prague’s rooftops.
- Entry: 200 CZK / 8 EUR
- Pro tip: go in the first hour after opening for a 50% discount. I only paid 100 CZK / 4 EUR!
Astronomical Clock
In the Old Town Square, the famous Astronomical Clock is one of the city’s biggest icons. I joined the crowd to watch the hourly show, and while it’s touristy, it’s still fascinating to see a piece of medieval engineering come to life.

Lunch at Lokál Dlouhááá
When in Prague, you have to try Czech food. I stopped at Lokál Dlouhááá, a lively restaurant popular with both locals and visitors. I had a hearty goulash with bread dumplings and washed it down with a local beer — all for just 307 CZK / 12 EUR. Simple, filling, and delicious.
Charles Bridge
A stroll across the Charles Bridge is a must. Yes, it’s crowded, but the views of the Vltava River and Prague Castle in the distance are worth it. Street musicians and artists add to the atmosphere. And some of the most famous attractions are on the other side. All 4 places below the photo gallery are across the Charles Bridge.

Lennon Wall
This colorful wall, covered in ever-changing graffiti, started as a tribute to John Lennon and peace. Today, it’s a symbol of freedom and expression. I spent some time looking at the layers of artwork and messages — every spot tells a story.

The Narrowest Street in Prague
A quirky little stop: this street is so narrow it actually has a traffic light to let people through one at a time. Fun, odd, and worth a quick photo. After you have made it to the other end of the alley, you have 2 choices: One, you go back the same way and to experience it twice. Or two, you go pass the restaurant and enjoy the view on the Charles Bridge and leave the place through another alley.
At first it seems that there is only a restaurant, that’s why most people turn around immediately. But right behind it on the left side are small stairs to go up.

Waldstein Garden & Dripstone Wall
For a break from the busy streets, I wandered into the Waldstein Garden. It’s peaceful, green, and comes with an unusual sight — the Dripstone Wall, an artificial rock wall that looks like something out of a fantasy film.
- Entry: free
Prague Castle
I finished the day at Prague Castle. I did not buy a ticket to go inside, but there is plenty around the castle to explore and enjoy for free. The South Garden is a long stretch of a park along the castle with fantastic views over the city.
Reflections on Prague
Prague was the perfect start to this long journey. Between medieval towers, hidden gems, hearty Czech food, and river views, I couldn’t have asked for a better send-off before heading further east.
